NGC 2264
Known as the Christmas Tree cluster, this colourful collection of stars lies 2,600 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Monoceros, the Unicorn.
o
The swirling gas clouds (below) appear red because of ultraviolet light emanating from the young, hot stars that look like blue ornaments on a Christmas tree.

The triangular feature near the bottom of the photo is an area of gas called the Cone Nebula.

The Cone Nebula is a famous nebula in the Orion Arm surrounding the NGC 2264 star cluster. The ‘cone’ is a triangular dark nebula near the bottom of the nebula.
o
The Cone Nebula is a cousin of the M16 pillars, which the Hubble imaged in 1995. Monstrous pillars of cold gas like the Cone and M16 are common in large regions of star birth.
o
The professional Astronomers believe the pillars are incubators for developing stars.
