Earth Features – Fog Bow

  • A fog bow is a rare, white, ghostly arc-shaped phenomenon caused by sunlight shining on tiny water droplets in fog or mists, often called a “white rainbow”.
    o
  • Occurring when the sun is behind the observer and fog is in front, the small droplets (smaller than 0.05 mm) scatter light via diffraction, blurring colours together.

  • White Rainbow (AstroAdventure, North Devon)
On Saturday 10th February 2023, a fogbow is an atmospheric phenomenon that resembles a rainbow but appears as a pale, colourless arc ~ was seen as a ‘ghostly’ white arc, and formed by the much smaller droplets found in fog or mist, because these droplets are so tiny (less than 0.05 mm) – the light waves are “smeared” together by diffraction, causing the colours to overlap and appear white rather than distinct bands.
