- John Goodricke’s plaque in York
Derek Rowley joined me in York on the very first day of the New Year (Thursday 1 January 2026) to visit the site of the John Goodricke plaque.

He discovered that some stars change brightness in a regular cycle. He was the first to recognise that certain variable stars behave this way. One of them is Algol, whose brightness changes every few days in a periodic pattern.

- Why John Goodricke important today?
His work is still important today – it helps scientists find exoplanet searches and continues to influence variable star research in modern astronomy, also study how stars change brightness.
o
He is now recognised as a role model for deaf astronomers, and York proudly commemorates him with a plaque outside Treasurer’s House.

- The eclipse with the reddish Full Moon is seen rising over Reading, Berkshire by a photographer, Jo Gardiner.

- At first we don’t see the maximum eclipse it was full cloudy, but managed to capture later on that what I saw in my photo attached on the left.

- We, Jo and Sylvia, would like to thank you to Derek for his wonderful patience with us and we have learnt a lot from him. We used smartphones to connect ASIair control our telescope for target the objects or planets.
