The Elephant’s Trunk Nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the much larger ionized gas region IC 1396 located in the constellation Cephus.

The Index Catalogue contains 5,386 celestial objects, making it a substantial addition to the NGC. These objects, like those of the NGC, include a variety of galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters.
