Astrophotography – Sun dog

Sun dogs, also known as parhelia, are bright spots of lights that appear on either side of the Sun, often flanking a 22° halo – they are an atmospheric optical phenomenon caused by the refraction of sunlight through hexagonal ice crystals in high, cold cirrus clouds or during very cold weather.

Sundogs are coloured spots of light that develop due to the refraction of light through ice crystals.

They are located approximately 22° halo either left, right, or both, from the sun, depending on where the ice crystals are present.

22° halo is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a halo with an apparent radius of approximately 22° around the Sun.
