Glossary – Phases of the Moon

  • the natural satellite of the earth.
  • visible by reflected light from the sun.
  • it takes the Moon 27.3 days to make a complete orbit around the Earth, but because the Earth is moving around the sun at the same time, it takes the moon 29.5 days.
  • it orbits at an average distance of about 30 times the diameter of Earth.
  • Over time Earth’s gravity has caused tidal locking, causing the same side of the Moon to always face Earth.
  • The moon’s age is 4.53 billion years.
  • Lunar – resembling the moon.
