Glossary – Noctilucent clouds (NLCs)

  • NLCs stands noctilucent clouds
  • shimmer in electric blue or silvery hues, glowing high above the horizon during twilight, long after the Sun has sets.
  • NLCs form in the mesosphere, 47 to 53 miles (75 to 85 km) above Earth—making them the highest clouds in our atmosphere.
  • made of tiny ice crystals that condense around dust particles, often from meteors or volcanic ash
  • most visible in summer months from June to early August in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • look low on the horizon in the northwest after sunset or northeast before sunrise.
