Glossary – Opposition
- opposition is when a planet appears on the opposite of the sky from the sun, as viewed from Earth.
- only planets that are further out in the Solar System than Earth can be in opposition – this includes Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
- Venus and Mercury can never be in opposition because they are closer to the Sun than Earth.
